Stress is the term now used in medicine to cover all the conditions— external or internal, physical or emotional—to which the body is exposed. Hans Selye, professor at the University of Montreal, in his book Stress, lists three diseases as outstanding examples of the effects on the body of our modern stressful life: thyrotoxicosis, a disease resulting from excess activity of the thyroid gland; duodenal ulcer; and hypertension, or high blood pressure, of the variety which comes from causes other than diseased kidneys. He groups these three under the name "stress diseases."
